Chad Approves Elon Musk's Starlink for High-Speed Internet Access

Chad has approved Elon Musk's satellite internet provider, Starlink, to operate in the country, marking a significant milestone in improving internet access in the Central African nation. Only 12% of Chad's population had internet access in 2022, and Starlink is expected to help bridge this gap.

The move is aimed at improving internet access in remote areas, digitalizing public services, and fostering the growth of tech startups in Chad. Starlink has already launched in several African countries, including Nigeria, Botswana, South Sudan, and Ghana, despite facing regulatory hurdles in some nations.

Chad's Communications Minister, Boukar Michel, stated that the country has been in talks with Starlink since 2021 and has agreed on the essentials. Elon Musk tweeted "Starlink now available in Chad!" on Monday, highlighting the internet provider's expanding presence in Africa.

However, the journey of Starlink on the continent has not been without challenges. Earlier this year, Cameroon ordered the seizure of Starlink equipment at ports due to its lack of a license. Additionally, Kenya's largest telecom firm, Safaricom, has urged regulators to consider requiring satellite internet providers like Starlink to partner with local mobile network operators.
