Casio has taken a step back in time with the release of the G-Shock DW-5000R, a meticulous recreation of the original 1983 G-Shock digital watch that started it all. This new timepiece is a testament to the brand's commitment to preserving its heritage while incorporating modern touches.
The DW-5000R is visually almost indistinguishable from its 1983 counterpart, the DW-5000C, with identical length and dimple positioning on the watch strap. The original G-Shock was born out of Casio engineer Kikuo Ibe's vision to create a damage-resistant timepiece after his mechanical watch shattered on the ground. The resulting design boasted "triple 10" resistance, featuring a battery life of ten years, water resistance of 10 bar, and the ability to survive a 10-meter drop.
The G-Shock brand has since become synonymous with streetwear culture and has evolved into one of the most iconic watch brands globally. The DW-5000R's release marks a significant milestone in the brand's history, as it pays homage to its roots while catering to modern tastes.
While the DW-5000R is largely faithful to its predecessor, there are some minor differences. The case size has increased slightly to 42.3mm from 41.6mm, and the buttons are shorter than the original. Additionally, the "water resist" figure now reads "20 BAR" instead of "200M." These subtle updates ensure that the watch remains true to its heritage while incorporating modern refinements.
In terms of specifications, the DW-5000R features a new LED backlight and employs "biomass plastic" on the bezel and band to reduce environmental impact. The case is still made from stainless steel, and the watch retains all the classic features, including a stopwatch timer, a multi-functional alarm, and a calendar display.
For those interested in a more detailed comparison between the recreation and the original, Casio's Japanese website offers a side-by-side analysis. The G-Shock DW-5000R is set to launch in Japan on December 13th, priced at 33,000 yen (approximately $217). While global availability and US pricing have yet to be confirmed, we have reached out to Casio for further information and will provide updates as they become available.
The release of the DW-5000R serves as a reminder of the G-Shock brand's enduring appeal and its ability to blend nostalgic charm with modern innovation. As the watch industry continues to evolve, it will be interesting to see how Casio's latest offering is received by fans and collectors alike.
