Canon has announced an updated version of its EOS R50, the EOS R50 V, which boasts enhanced video capabilities, a more compact design, and a lower price point. The new camera is set to launch in April 2025, priced at $649.99 for the body alone, with a bundle option including the RF-S14-30mm F4-6.3 lens available for $849.99.
The EOS R50 V builds upon the original EOS R50, which was launched in 2023, by offering improved video capabilities, including 4K video recording at 60fps, up from 30fps on the previous model. Additionally, the camera borrows features from the video-focused PowerShot V1 point-and-shoot, which was announced in February.
The camera features the same 24.2-megapixel APS-C CMOS sensor as the original EOS R50 and utilizes Canon's Dual Pixel AF II system with focus breathing compensation, also found on the EOS R6 Mark II and the PowerShot V1. New video recording modes include options for slow or fast shutters, depending on the type of action being captured, as well as a video mode with electronic stabilization to smooth out footage captured while the camera is moving.
One notable difference between the EOS R50 V and its predecessor is the lack of a built-in flash and electronic viewfinder. Instead, framing is done solely on an articulated three-inch touchscreen. The camera's design has also been revamped to make it easier to use in both vertical and landscape modes, with a redesigned grip, an additional tripod screw mount on the side of the camera, and a second video record button on the front.
The EOS R50 V also features a dedicated livestreaming button, providing quick access to four different modes, including HDMI and support for Canon's Camera Connect and Switcher Mobile apps. While the camera may appeal to filmmakers, its limited capabilities make it better suited for video content creators looking to upgrade from the PowerShot V1 and take advantage of interchangeable lenses.
In related news, Canon has announced global availability for the PowerShot V1, which was initially launched in February 2025 with a limited rollout in several countries. The point-and-shoot camera will now be available in the US, priced at $899.99, with the same shipping timeline as the EOS R50 V.
The EOS R50 V's updated features and lower price point are likely to appeal to content creators and photographers looking for a more affordable and compact camera solution. With its enhanced video capabilities and redesigned body, the EOS R50 V is poised to be a popular choice in the entry-level mirrorless camera market.
