The 2025 Global Emotions Report by CEOWORLD magazine has shed light on the most and least stressed countries worldwide, with Burundi emerging as the most stressed country in Africa. The report, which analyzed stress levels in 197 countries and territories, reveals that many African nations rank among the most stressed, with South Sudan, Afghanistan, Syria, and Malawi following closely behind Burundi.
The study, conducted between December 2, 2024, and January 12, 2025, examined four key stress factors: work, money, social and family life, and health and safety. Over a third of respondents reported feeling "a lot of stress" the day before they were surveyed. The results highlight the significant challenges faced by many African countries, including conflict, poverty, and lack of access to basic resources, which contribute to heightened stress levels.
In contrast, the report also reveals that Monaco is the least stressed country in the world, scoring an impressive 83.83. The small European nation, known for its luxurious lifestyle, financial prosperity, and high standard of living, enjoys a stable economy and excellent healthcare system. Following Monaco, the least stressed nations include Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Switzerland, and Ireland.
The top 10 most stressed countries in Africa in 2025, according to the report, are:
1. Burundi - 26.31 (197th globally)
2. South Sudan - 26.78 (196th globally)
3. Malawi - 28.28 (193rd globally)
4. Central African Republic - 29.19 (191st globally)
5. Madagascar - 29.35 (190th globally)
6. Sudan - 29.94 (188th globally)
7. Eritrea - 30.17 (187th globally)
8. Mozambique - 30.42 (186th globally)
9. Niger - 30.72 (185th globally)
10. Democratic Republic of the Congo [DR Congo] - 30.99 (184th globally)
The report's findings have significant implications for policymakers, business leaders, and individuals alike, highlighting the need to address the root causes of stress and work towards creating more stable and prosperous societies. As the world continues to grapple with the challenges of the 21st century, understanding the complexities of stress and its impact on individuals and communities is crucial for building a better future.
In the context of Africa, the report's findings underscore the need for sustained efforts to address the continent's development challenges, including conflict resolution, poverty reduction, and improved access to basic resources. By doing so, African countries can work towards creating more stable and prosperous societies, where individuals can thrive and reach their full potential.
As the world moves forward, it is essential to prioritize the well-being and mental health of individuals, recognizing the critical role that stress plays in shaping our lives and societies.
