Bluesky, the social network that recently gained attention with its TikTok-like custom video feed, is further expanding its video capabilities with a new video tab on user profiles. The feature, introduced in the Bluesky 1.97 update, allows users to showcase their uploaded videos, whether original content or shared from other social networks, including TikTok.
The move is seen as a strategic play to capitalize on the growing demand for video-based social activity, as well as a potential revenue stream for the company. Bluesky could charge for premium features like longer or higher-quality video as part of its upcoming subscription plan. This development comes on the heels of the U.S. ban on TikTok, which has sparked a surge in interest among developers and users alike.
However, not all Bluesky users are enthusiastic about the new feature. Some have expressed concerns about the platform becoming too similar to TikTok, with requests to disable the video tab on their profiles or prioritize other features, such as an Edit button, reminiscent of X. Despite these reservations, there is clear demand and developer interest in building video-first Bluesky clients.
Several developers are already working on "Bluesky TikTok" apps, including Berlin-based Sebastian Vogelsang, who has developed Skeets and Flashes, a "Bluesky Instagram" of sorts. Other teams, such as those behind Reelo and Skylight, are also building video-centric apps. The interest is so strong that even celeb investor and entrepreneur Mark Cuban has expressed openness to backing a video app built on the AT Protocol, which powers Bluesky.
The Bluesky 1.97 update also brings other improvements, including a menu for blocking a user or deleting a conversation after reporting a DM (direct message), as well as translation enhancements. While the new video tab is a significant development, it remains to be seen how users will respond to the changes and whether Bluesky can successfully navigate the delicate balance between innovation and user preferences.
As the social media landscape continues to evolve, Bluesky's video-focused strategy will be closely watched by industry observers. With the potential for premium features and revenue streams on the horizon, the company's next moves will be crucial in determining its position in the market. One thing is clear, however: Bluesky is committed to doubling down on video, and its users will be the ones to ultimately shape the platform's direction.
