Belkin Recalls BoostCharge Pro Power Bank Due to Fire Risk, Offers Refunds

Belkin has issued a recall of its BoostCharge Pro Fast Wireless Charger for Apple Watch + Power Bank 10K due to a manufacturing defect that can cause the charger's lithium cell component to overheat, potentially leading to a risk of fire. The company is urging customers to stop using the charger immediately and is offering full refunds to those affected.

The recalled charger can be identified by its model number, BPD005, printed in white text on the back of the charger, behind its Apple Watch charging pad. According to Belkin, there have been no reported injuries related to the issue, but customers are advised to take immediate action to ensure their safety.

To initiate the refund process, customers can submit an online recall form, which requires the power bank's serial number, located on the back near the model number. If the serial number is missing or illegible, a copy of the purchase receipt and a photo showing the front and back of the power bank will be required for refunds to be approved.

It's essential to note that Belkin is not offering a replacement for the defective charger but instead providing a full refund. Customers are also cautioned against discarding the power bank in a trash or recycling bin, as this can cause fires and contribute to the growing e-waste problem.

Belkin will email instructions for safely disposing of the power bank to customers with approved refund requests. In the meantime, customers are advised to store the charger in a safe, dry location away from anything flammable or anything that can damage the power bank. In the US, customers can find facilities that can safely dispose of power banks like this through the Environmental Protection Agency's website or other organizations that specialize in handling e-waste.

This recall highlights the importance of proper quality control measures in the manufacturing process, particularly when it comes to products with lithium-ion batteries. It also underscores the need for responsible e-waste disposal practices to mitigate the environmental impact of discarded electronics.

As the tech industry continues to grapple with issues related to product safety and sustainability, this recall serves as a reminder of the importance of prioritizing consumer safety and environmental responsibility. Belkin's prompt response to the issue is a step in the right direction, and customers can expect a full refund for their defective chargers.
