Arlan Hamilton, the founder of Backstage Capital, announced on Friday that she will be stepping down from her role as managing partner to take on a new position as chairperson and advisor. This move marks a significant shift for the firm, which Hamilton founded in 2015 with a mission to amplify underestimated founders.
In a statement released online, Hamilton explained that her new role will allow her to focus on amplifying Backstage's mission, hosting office hours with founders and investors, chairing the advisory board, and bringing new opportunities to the table through her platform. This change comes as the firm enters a strategic partnership with 360 Venture Collective, which will acquire a significant stake in Backstage's management entity and join in co-managing operations, providing capital, and helping the firm scale.
The partnership will also lead to the launch of a $200 million fund in 2025, as announced by Hamilton. This development is significant, given the challenges that Backstage Capital has faced in recent years. According to Pitchbook, the firm has invested in over 200 companies, including fintech Guava and information platform Career Karma, and has around $20 million in assets under management, with 56 exits.
However, as reported in 2022, the firm had slowed down its investment pace, announcing that it would only back existing portfolio companies and substantially downsize its team from 12 to three people. Hamilton had also expressed frustration with limited partners, stating that the firm found itself in a "purgatory kind of position" due to some investors believing it already had enough support, despite the reality being otherwise.
The landscape for firms like Backstage and the founders they support has only become more challenging since 2022. Funding and support for diverse founders and operators have stalled, particularly for Black founders. Hamilton's statement emphasized that the partnership with 360 Ventures would ensure the firm's sustainability while multiplying its ability to support underestimated founders and create a lasting legacy.
Hamilton expressed confidence that this next chapter would take the firm to "incredible heights" and that she was honored to continue being part of the journey in her new capacity. The move is seen as a strategic one, allowing Hamilton to focus on her strengths while bringing in new resources and expertise to support the firm's mission.
As the tech industry continues to grapple with issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion, the partnership between Backstage Capital and 360 Venture Collective is a significant development. It remains to be seen how this new chapter will unfold, but one thing is clear – Arlan Hamilton's continued commitment to amplifying underestimated founders will be a crucial factor in shaping the future of the tech industry.
