Azure CDN Shutdown: Microsoft Announces January 15, 2025, Deadline for Migration

Microsoft has announced that the Azure Content Delivery Network (CDN) from Edgio will shut down on January 15, 2025, due to the company's bankruptcy. This sudden shutdown will impact Azure DevOps and GitHub Actions installation tools, which are dependent on some of the resources hosted on the Edgio CDN.

In a post on GitHub, Rich Lander, principal program manager of .NET core at Microsoft, explained that the Edgio CDN services will be terminated, and users will need to migrate to a new CDN using new domains. Lander warned that there is a chance the Edgio CDN services will be terminated before users have a chance to adapt to the proposed changes, which could lead to downtime or permanent unavailability of the .azureedge.net domains.

The shutdown is a result of Edgio's bankruptcy, which was announced in September. The company filed for Chapter 11 relief in preparation for the sale of some assets, which were acquired by Akamai in a bankruptcy auction in November. The deal closed in December, and Microsoft was informed that the Edgio platform will end service on January 15, 2025.

Microsoft has set intermediate deadlines for users to complete their migration off the Azure CDN from Edgio platform. Users are advised to lock their profiles by January 3, 2025, and block automatic migration to Azure Front Door by January 6, 2025. The company recommends that customers complete their migration by January 7, 2025, to avoid service disruptions.

If users fail to migrate their services by January 7, 2025, Microsoft will attempt to migrate them to Azure Front Door on a "best effort" basis. However, this may cause issues related to billing, features, availability, and/or performance. To avoid these problems, Microsoft has posted guidance on how to migrate off the Azure CDN from Edgio to another platform.

The shutdown of the Azure CDN from Edgio highlights the importance of having a contingency plan in place for cloud-based services. The sudden termination of the Edgio CDN services will undoubtedly cause disruptions to users, and it is essential for companies to have a plan B to minimize the impact of such events.

In the broader context, the shutdown of the Azure CDN from Edgio is a reminder of the risks associated with relying on third-party services. As companies increasingly move to the cloud, they must be prepared for unexpected events like this and have strategies in place to mitigate the impact on their operations.
