AWS re:Invent 2024, the largest annual conference of Amazon Web Services, has officially commenced in Las Vegas, with a packed schedule of sessions running through December 6. The event kicked off with a keynote address by AWS CEO Matt Garman, marking his first re:Invent as the company's leader.
Garman's keynote is highly anticipated, particularly given the current market perception that AWS is trailing behind Microsoft and Google in the generative AI race. In recent months, AWS has introduced several generative AI services, claiming that its revenue from generative AI has reached "multiple billions" of dollars. The company's partnership with Anthropic, which includes Anthropic's team guiding AWS' future AI chip design efforts, is also expected to be a key topic of discussion.
Despite these advancements, AWS has faced setbacks, including the departure of top AI executive Matt Wood and delays in its flagship Olympus model. Garman's keynote is expected to address these challenges and provide insights into the company's strategy for staying competitive in the AI landscape.
In an interview with TechCrunch in October, Garman hinted that re:Invent 2024 would not be solely focused on AI, but would instead feature innovations across the entire stack of AWS, including compute, storage, databases, analytics, and AI. This broad approach is reflected in the re:Invent catalog, which lists over 500 generative AI-related sessions.
Amazon CEO Andy Jassy is also expected to make a cameo appearance during Garman's keynote, which Amazon describes as "highlighting how AWS is reinventing foundational building blocks as well as developing new experiences to empower customers and partners with what they need to build a better future."
In addition to Garman's keynote, AWS VP Swami Sivasubramanian will deliver an AI- and data-focused presentation on new AWS services on December 4, while Amazon CTO Werner Vogels will share his tech predictions for the coming year on December 5. Both speeches will be streamed on YouTube, and TechCrunch will provide comprehensive coverage of the event.
As the conference unfolds, industry observers will be watching closely for announcements and insights that could impact the cloud computing and AI landscapes. With AWS re:Invent 2024 expected to be an eventful and informative conference, TechCrunch will continue to provide updates and analysis throughout the week.
Stay tuned for more coverage of AWS re:Invent 2024, including key takeaways from Garman's keynote and other major announcements from the conference.
