AWS re:Invent 2024, the largest conference of the year for Amazon Web Services, is just around the corner, and all signs point to it being an eventful one. The conference kicks off in Las Vegas on Sunday, with sessions scheduled to run through December 6. AWS CEO Matt Garman will take the stage on December 3 for a keynote address, which will be livestreamed on YouTube.
This year's re:Invent marks Garman's first as AWS' CEO, following the departure of Adam Selipsky in May. As such, the conference is expected to be a significant milestone for Garman, who will likely use the platform to address market perceptions that AWS is trailing behind Microsoft and Google in the generative AI race.
Despite facing setbacks, including the departure of top AI executive Matt Wood and delays to its flagship Olympus model, AWS has made significant strides in generative AI in recent months. The company claims that its revenue from generative AI has reached "multiple billions" of dollars, and it has introduced a number of new generative AI services. Additionally, AWS recently shored up its partnership with Anthropic, becoming the AI company's primary model training partner and agreeing to have Anthropic's team guide its future AI chip design efforts.
While Garman is expected to discuss generative AI during his keynote, he has hinted that the conference will cover a broader range of topics. In an interview with TechCrunch in October, he stated that re:Invent wouldn't be "just an AI conference" this year, and that innovations would be announced across the stack in compute, storage, databases, analytics, and AI.
The re:Invent catalog lists over 500 generative AI-related sessions, and attendees can expect a cameo from Amazon CEO Andy Jassy during Garman's keynote. The theme of the conference, according to Amazon, is "highlighting how AWS is reinventing foundational building blocks as well as developing new experiences to empower customers and partners with what they need to build a better future."
In addition to Garman's keynote, AWS VP Swami Sivasubramanian will give an AI- and data-focused presentation on new AWS services on December 4, while Amazon CTO Werner Vogels will dive deep into his tech predictions for the coming year on December 5. Both speeches will be streamed on YouTube, and TechCrunch will provide comprehensive coverage of all the major announcements and developments from re:Invent 2024.
As the cloud computing landscape continues to evolve, re:Invent 2024 is poised to be a pivotal event, with major implications for the industry as a whole. Stay tuned for our in-depth coverage of the conference, and get ready to learn about the latest innovations and advancements from AWS.
