AWS, Amazon's cloud computing unit, has announced the Education Equity Initiative, a five-year program aimed at providing education organizations with technologies to build digital learning innovations for underrepresented communities. The initiative comes with a commitment of $100 million in cloud credits over the next five years.

According to Tom Berry, who leads the education work within AWS's Social Impact and Responsibility team, this initiative marks a departure from the company's traditional approach to education-focused projects. Instead of directly training teachers and kids, AWS will support hundreds of non-profit organizations globally in building tools to teach coding and other computer-related skills to their local communities.

The Education Equity Initiative is designed to empower organizations that are best situated to impact underserved community learners. AWS will provide not only cloud credits but also hands-on help with building and scaling the applications that these organizations will develop. The company has already run a pilot with 50 organizations from 10 different countries, demonstrating the potential of this approach.

One of the early partners in this initiative is Rocket Learning, an India-based nonprofit that improves access to quality, early-childhood education for underserved children. Rocket Learning is using Amazon Q in AWS Quicksight to build tools that evaluate the effectiveness of the content they are creating. Another partner is Code.org, a well-known nonprofit organization dedicated to providing computer science education to K-12 schools. Code.org has rolled out a new tool for computer science teachers as part of this program, essentially an AI teaching assistant.

The new tool addresses a significant pain point in computer science education, where many teachers lack confidence in teaching computer science due to limited training. The AI teaching assistant helps teachers navigate project-based learning and provides support in evaluating student projects. This initiative will run in parallel to Amazon's existing programs, such as its Future Engineer program and its AI and ML Scholarship program.
