Asus Unveils ROG Flow Z13 Gaming Tablet with AMD's Powerful Integrated Graphics

Asus has unveiled its latest ROG Flow Z13 gaming tablet, a Surface Pro-like device that boasts impressive specifications and a unique design. The 2025 model marks a significant departure from its predecessors, as it ditches dedicated graphics processing units (GPUs) in favor of AMD's powerful new integrated graphics.

The ROG Flow Z13 is powered by AMD's "Strix Halo" processor, which comes in two configurations: the Ryzen AI Max 390 and the Ryzen AI Max Plus 395. The top-end model features 16 CPU cores and 40 graphics cores, while the base model has 12 CPU cores and 32 graphics cores. This integrated graphics solution is capable of delivering 120W TDP, making it a formidable performer for a tablet of its size.

The tablet's 13-inch, 2560 x 1600 touchscreen display boasts a speedy 180Hz refresh rate, a rarity in laptops and tablets of this size. Additionally, the ROG Flow Z13 features a range of ports, including two USB 4, one USB-A 3.2 Gen 2, HDMI 2.1, a microSD card slot, and a 3.5mm combination headphone/mic jack. It also supports Wi-Fi 7 and comes with a 5-megapixel front-facing webcam and 13-megapixel rear-facing camera.

One of the most notable design features of the ROG Flow Z13 is its redesigned stainless steel vapor chamber, which helps to cool the graphics-heavy processor. The tablet also features a new detachable keyboard with larger keycaps and a more generously sized touchpad, as well as a "ScreenXpert" button that summons a Command-Center-like widget for controlling display settings and more.

In terms of battery life, Asus claims the ROG Flow Z13 can last up to 10 hours on a single charge. In a hands-on test, the reviewer was able to get through a full eight-plus-hour workday with minimal issues. However, it's worth noting that the tablet's performance is limited when running on battery power, and it requires a 200W power adapter to reach its full potential.

The ROG Flow Z13's gaming performance is impressive, with the reviewer able to play Helldivers 2 at 60fps or higher on the tablet's native 2.5K resolution. However, the performance does take a hit when running on battery power, dropping to around 45-50fps.

While the ROG Flow Z13 is an impressive device, it's worth questioning whether a gaming tablet makes sense in 2025, given the rise of dedicated handheld gaming devices like the Steam Deck. The tablet's lack of Thunderbolt 5 also limits its ability to take advantage of Asus' new XG Mobile eGPU, which would add significant bulk to the device. The ROG Flow Z13 is set to launch in February, and it will be interesting to see how it fares in the market.

Overall, the Asus ROG Flow Z13 is an intriguing device that showcases the potential of AMD's integrated graphics solution. While it may not be the most practical gaming device, it's certainly an impressive feat of engineering and a testament to the innovation happening in the laptop and tablet space.
