Apple's Upgraded Siri Features May Arrive This Fall, Sources Suggest

After months of delays and setbacks, Apple's revamped Siri features may finally be ready to debut this fall, according to a report from The New York Times. The upgraded virtual assistant is expected to boast more personalized and conversational capabilities, including the ability to edit and send photos to friends on request. This development marks a significant milestone in Apple's efforts to revamp its AI-powered assistant, which has lagged behind competitors in recent years.

The reported fall release timeline is the earliest prospective rollout date we've seen so far. In March, Apple spokesperson Jacqueline Roy stated that the company expects to start releasing its upgraded Siri features "in the coming year." Meanwhile, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman suggested that a "true modernized, conversational version of Siri" won't be ready until 2027 "at best" due to development difficulties.

Leadership issues within Apple's AI department have reportedly contributed to the delays. John Giannandrea, who previously led AI and Siri at Apple, was replaced in March after CEO Tim Cook "lost confidence" in his capabilities. The Information reports that senior Apple director Robby Walker and software executive Sebastien Marineau-Mes clashed over who should oversee Siri's upgrade project. Several former employees from Apple's AI and machine learning (AI/ML) group criticized Walker for lacking the ambition or risk-taking necessary to revamp Siri, dubbing the team "AIMLess."

Earlier setbacks for the project occurred in 2023 when Cook's efforts to double the team's budget for AI chips were reportedly rejected by Luca Maestri, Apple's finance chief. Maestri instead directed the team to make their existing chips – 50,000 of which were more than five years old – more efficient. Sources familiar with Cook's request told The New York Times that this was "far fewer" than the hundreds of thousands of chips being purchased by competitors like Microsoft, Amazon, Google, and Meta.

The delayed release of Apple's upgraded Siri features has significant implications for the company's competitive standing in the AI-powered assistant market. With Amazon's Alexa, Google Assistant, and Microsoft's Cortana already offering more advanced capabilities, Apple's Siri has struggled to keep pace. The fall release of the revamped Siri features may help Apple regain ground, but it remains to be seen whether the company can overcome its development challenges and deliver a truly modernized virtual assistant.

As the tech industry continues to evolve, the importance of AI-powered assistants will only continue to grow. Apple's efforts to revamp Siri are a crucial step in staying competitive, and the company's ability to deliver on its promises will have significant implications for its future success. With the reported fall release date fast approaching, all eyes will be on Apple to see if it can finally deliver a Siri upgrade that meets the expectations of its users.
