Apple, the tech giant, has been secretly testing an app designed to help people with prediabetes manage their blood sugar levels, according to a Bloomberg report. The app, which is not expected to be released, aimed to assist individuals in making lifestyle changes to prevent the development of Type 2 diabetes.
The app required Apple employees to validate their prediabetic status through a blood test and then track their blood sugar levels using various devices available on the market. Users would log changes related to their food intake, enabling them to see how different choices impacted their blood sugar levels.
Although Apple has paused work on the app to focus on other health features, the project highlights the company's interest in exploring metabolic health tracking, a burgeoning trend in the wearables space. Other companies, such as Dexcom and Abbott, have already released over-the-counter continuous glucose monitors (CGMs) aimed at prediabetics and Type 2 diabetics who don't use insulin.
The development of such technology could have significant implications for the health tech industry, as it could enable individuals to take preventative measures against diabetes and other related health conditions. While Apple's project may be on hold, it's clear that the company is committed to advancing health tech and exploring new ways to integrate health features into its products.
