Antonblast, the latest release from developer Summitsphere, is a platformer that's equal parts chaotic and charming. This maximalist masterpiece is a love letter to the '90s, with its vibrant pixel art, delightfully retro character designs, and over-the-top gameplay that's reminiscent of classic Saturday morning cartoons.
At its core, Antonblast is a fast-paced, explosive action platformer that's all about momentum. Players take on the role of Anton or Annie, charging through 12 levels to retrieve stolen Spirits (think drinks) from the clutches of a villainous Satan. The game's levels are meticulously designed, each with its own unique gimmick or theme that's explored with a level of precision that's eerily reminiscent of Nintendo's best work.
From turning into a pinball to bouncing around as an explosive bomb, each level is a masterclass in creative design. And just when you think things can't get any crazier, the game throws in a timer and a frantic run back to the entrance, leaving players breathless and begging for more.
Despite its chaotic nature, Antonblast has a way of making players feel surprisingly calm, even when things get out of hand. The game's flow state is infectious, and as players improve, they'll find themselves surging forward with ease, even when the screen is filled with enemies and obstacles.
Of course, no platformer would be complete without epic boss fights, and Antonblast delivers in spades. These screen-filling spectacles are both challenging and thrilling, with quick reloads that make even the most frustrating moments manageable. The final level and boss are particularly noteworthy, with a payoff that's well worth the effort.
While Antonblast can be a little loud and immature at times, its creators' passion for the project shines through in every aspect of the game. From the delightfully retro character designs to the sheer sense of fun that permeates every level, it's clear that Summitsphere had a blast making this game – and that enthusiasm is infectious.
Antonblast is now available on Nintendo Switch and Steam, offering players a chance to experience this wild, maximalist ride for themselves. So buckle up, grab a controller, and get ready to blast back to the '90s in style.
