Android Auto's Latest Beta Brings Full Android Game Support

Google's latest beta version of Android Auto, 14.1, has introduced a significant new feature: full Android game support. This update allows users to play a selection of Android games directly on their car's touchscreen, marking a major expansion of the platform's capabilities.

The new feature is currently available to testers and includes support for four games: Candy Crush Soda Saga, Angry Birds 2, Farm Heroes Saga, and Beach Buggy Racing. To access these games, users must first have them installed on their phone, and they can only be played while the car is parked. According to 9to5Google, which tested the feature, the game will close immediately and be grayed out in the app drawer and app switcher when the car shifts out of park.

This update also marks the first time that fullscreen apps have been available in Android Auto. While it's unclear whether this feature will be extended to other types of apps, it brings Android Auto closer in line with the software experience on cars with Google built-in, which already support a wider range of games to play while parked.

Gaming support in Android Auto was announced by Google earlier this month as part of its March feature drop, but the company has not provided a timeline for when the feature will leave beta. This is not the first time games have been available on Android Auto, however. In 2021, Google introduced a small number of basic titles running on HTML5 as part of its GameSnacks service.

The addition of full Android game support to Android Auto has significant implications for the platform's future. As cars become increasingly connected and integrated with our personal devices, the ability to access a wide range of apps and services while on the go will become increasingly important. By expanding Android Auto's capabilities to include gaming, Google is positioning the platform as a more comprehensive and engaging experience for users.

It will be interesting to see how this feature develops and whether it will be extended to other types of apps. As the automotive and technology industries continue to converge, innovations like this will play a key role in shaping the future of in-car entertainment and connectivity.
