Google has announced that Android 16 will introduce a significant hearing accessibility feature, Auracast, which will allow people who use hearing aids to connect directly to audio streams in public spaces. This feature will be available on Samsung Galaxy phones running One UI 7 and Google Pixel 9 phones with the Android 16 beta.
Auracast is a Bluetooth Audio LE feature that enables one broadcaster to connect to a virtually unlimited number of Bluetooth LE devices. This technology has been around since the Bluetooth LE spec was completed in 2022, and Samsung's recent Galaxy phones already support sharing audio to other devices via Auracast. Google is now adding hearing aid support, which will allow users to tune in to audio broadcasts in places where it's otherwise hard to hear, such as public announcement systems at airports or audio feeds at concert venues.
The implementation of Auracast on Pixel 9 phones will be straightforward, with users able to connect to a broadcast by simply scanning a QR code. Alternatively, users can access public broadcasts through their settings menu, similar to connecting to a Wi-Fi network. This feature has the potential to greatly improve the accessibility of public spaces for people who use hearing aids.
In addition to the Auracast announcement, Google has also confirmed that Android 16 has reached platform stability, bringing it one step closer to a full launch. The Android 16 developer preview was first released in November last year, and Google plans to shift its Android release schedule forward this year to Q2. With I/O just around the corner, there's a lot brewing in Mountain View.
The introduction of Auracast hearing aid support in Android 16 is a significant step forward for accessibility in mobile technology. As the tech industry continues to evolve, it's essential that companies prioritize inclusivity and accessibility in their products. Google's move to incorporate Auracast into Android 16 demonstrates a commitment to making technology more accessible to everyone, regardless of ability.
As the Android ecosystem continues to grow and evolve, it will be interesting to see how Auracast is adopted and implemented by device manufacturers and developers. With the potential to greatly improve the accessibility of public spaces, Auracast is an exciting development that could have a significant impact on the lives of people who use hearing aids.
