Amazon has made a significant move in the artificial intelligence (AI) space by announcing its own set of Nova AI foundation models, which will be available as part of the Amazon Bedrock model library in AWS. This development marks a crucial step in the company's efforts to stay ahead in the AI race, where it faces stiff competition from newer players like OpenAI.
The Nova series includes three "understanding" models, namely Amazon Nova Micro, Amazon Nova Lite, and Amazon Nova Pro. These models are designed to cater to different use cases, with Nova Micro optimized for speed and cost, Nova Lite being a very low-cost multimodal model, and Nova Pro being a highly capable multimodal model. Additionally, Amazon is training a model called Amazon Nova Premier, which is expected to be its most capable multimodal model for complex reasoning tasks and is slated for release in early 2025.
Beyond the understanding models, Amazon is also releasing content generation models, including Amazon Nova Canvas, an image generation model, and Amazon Nova Reel, a video generation model. Notably, these models come equipped with watermarking capabilities to promote responsible AI use. To demonstrate the potential of Nova Reel, Amazon has shared a mock ad for a fake pasta brand.
Later in 2025, Amazon plans to release a speech-to-speech model and a native multimodal-to-multimodal model, further expanding its AI capabilities. The company made these announcements at its AWS re:Invent conference, which is currently underway in Las Vegas.
In another significant development, Amazon revealed that it is building a massive AI compute cluster in partnership with Anthropic, a company in which Amazon has invested $8 billion. This cluster, which will rely on Amazon's Trainium 2 chips, is expected to be the world's largest AI compute cluster reported to date when completed. This partnership will enable Anthropic to build and deploy its future models on this infrastructure.
Amazon's move into the AI space is seen as a strategic effort to leverage its existing internet infrastructure, which is already powered by AWS. This could give the company an advantage over newer players, as large enterprises may be more willing to use Amazon's AI offerings due to its trusted reputation.
