8BitDo has announced a new version of its mechanical keyboard, the Retro 87 Mechanical Keyboard - Xbox Edition, which combines a nostalgic design inspired by the original Xbox console with modern features like RGB backlighting. The keyboard is now available for preorder on Amazon for $119.99, with shipping expected to start on January 16th, 2025.
The Xbox Edition keyboard features a transparent green shell and matching keycaps, reminiscent of the iconic Xbox console. However, what sets it apart from previous iterations is the addition of RGB backlighting, which offers eight different modes, including animated waves of rainbow colors or individual keys illuminating. The keyboard's built-in 2,000mAh battery can keep it running for up to 200 hours, although it's unclear if this estimate includes the backlighting.
In terms of functionality, the keyboard boasts a tenkeyless layout with 87 keys, including a full function row, a Windows key, and an Xbox logo button in the upper right corner that serves as a shortcut to the Windows Game Bar. The keyboard pairs double-layered ABS keycaps featuring a matte UV coating for durability with Kailh Jellyfish X switches, and is compatible with 8BitDo's Ultimate Software V2, allowing for customizable mapping and macro creation.
As with its other mechanical keyboards, 8BitDo includes a pair of large Super Buttons that can be programmed to trigger macros or other functions. The keyboard can connect to devices via Bluetooth or using its included 2.4GHz dongle, and can still function with a dead battery when connected via USB-C cable.
In addition to the keyboard, 8BitDo has also announced the matching 8BitDo Retro R8 Mouse - Xbox Edition, which features a similar transparent green shell and four programmable side buttons (two on each side) matching the colors of the action buttons on the original Xbox controllers. The mouse uses a PAW 3395 optical sensor with six selectable sensitivity levels ranging from 50 DPI to 26,000 DPI, and its polling rate can be adjusted using 8BitDo's Ultimate Software.
The Retro R8 Mouse's primary buttons use Kailh Sword GM X Micro Switches, which 8BitDo claims have been "engineered for up to 100 million clicks." The mouse's 450mAh rechargeable battery can power the mouse for up to 100 hours when using a Bluetooth connection, but with a low-latency 2.4GHz connection, battery life ranges between 26 to 105 hours depending on the polling rate. The mouse includes a matching charging dock that also features a "signal-extending feature" that 8BitDo says "ensures robust and uninterrupted connectivity."
The release of the Xbox Edition keyboard and mouse marks a significant expansion of 8BitDo's product lineup, catering to gamers and tech enthusiasts who appreciate nostalgic design combined with modern functionality. With its unique features and design, the Retro 87 Mechanical Keyboard - Xbox Edition is likely to appeal to fans of the original Xbox console and those seeking a premium gaming experience.
As the gaming industry continues to evolve, the demand for high-quality gaming peripherals is on the rise. 8BitDo's latest offering is a testament to the company's commitment to innovation and customer satisfaction, and it will be interesting to see how the gaming community responds to this new product.
